Dutch Ads Seek Word on Kidnap Victim

The family of kidnaped Dutch business executive Gerrit Jan Heijn sought renewed contact with his abductors Monday by placing ads in newspapers, a move that raised new doubts about his survival.

Heijn is a supermarket tycoon who disappeared 67 days ago on his way to the dentist, and his family said last month that it was placing small personal advertisements between “Johan” and “Maria” in newspapers in an effort to communicate with his captors. The latest advertisement in major Dutch newspapers read: “Johan, I have twice waited futilely for your message. Maria.”

Two weeks ago, the family asked for a color photo of Heijn holding a recent newspaper as proof that he was alive.

Press reports have said the family is negotiating a $12.5 million ransom of diamonds and cash.
