The Senate Rules Committee unanimously authorized a yearlong, $740,000 investigation of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and alleged mismanagement of natural resources such as gas and oil. The investigation also will be looking into alleged fraud and malfeasance in the administration of housing, education and health programs. The committee voted to approve $240,000 for the current year. The special investigation follows a series of articles in the Arizona Republic last month. The newspaper reported that multimillion-dollar federal Indian programs are plagued by fraud, incompetence and deceit.
