India Police Suspected of Killing Muslims
The human rights group Amnesty International charged Thursday that police in India’s largest state may have killed more than 70 unarmed Muslims during riots in May.
In a report received here, the London-based organization said “there was strong evidence to suggest” that paramilitary police were responsible for deaths and disappearances during Hindu-Muslim riots in Meerut, near New Delhi.
“The government is aware of the Amnesty report but we cannot say anything about the facts mentioned there,” a spokesman for the Home Ministry said.
