The human rights group Amnesty International charged Thursday that police in India’s largest state may have killed more than 70 unarmed Muslims during riots in May.

In a report received here, the London-based organization said “there was strong evidence to suggest” that paramilitary police were responsible for deaths and disappearances during Hindu-Muslim riots in Meerut, near New Delhi.

“The government is aware of the Amnesty report but we cannot say anything about the facts mentioned there,” a spokesman for the Home Ministry said.
