Ceradyne, a Costa Mesa high-technology ceramics manufacturer, reported a net loss of $2.8 million for the third quarter, contrasted with net income of $526,000 a year earlier. Sales for the period rose to $5.6 million from $5.1 million. For the first nine months of 1987, the company reported a net loss of $2.5 million, contrasted with year-earlier earnings of $1.1 million. Nine-month sales increased to $19.6 million from $13.7 million. The losses reflect declining shipments of Ceradyne’s products during the third quarter, the company said.
