PASSINGS : Brand Blanshard; ‘Philosopher’s Philosopher’

Brand Blanshard, 95, praised by scholars as “the philosopher’s philosopher.” Twice a Rhodes scholar, Blanshard taught at Yale from 1945 until his retirement in 1961. He wrote six books, including “The Nature of Thought,” and was particularly praised for the 1954 volume, “On Philosophical Style.” His latest work was “Four Reasonable Men: Marcus Aurelius, John Stuart Mill, Ernest Renan and Henry Sidgwick.” In New Haven, Conn. on Wednesday.
