Hanoi Will Return Remains of Five Believed to Be MIAs

WASHINGTON — Vietnam next week will return the remains of what are believed to be five Americans missing in action from the Vietnam War, the Defense Department said Friday.
The Pentagon, in a statement, said arrangements have been made for U.S. officials to take possession of the remains in Hanoi next Wednesday and fly them to Hawaii for identification in an U.S. Army laboratory.
“The U.S. government appreciates the initiatives taken by Vietnam to expeditiously repatriate these remains and hopes it represents just one of many continued steps to resolve the longstanding humanitarian issue,” the statement said.
This will be the first return of dead Americans since Vietnam handed over three sets of remains on Sept. 24.
The Pentagon has been listing 1,776 Americans as missing and unaccounted for in Vietnam and another 637 as missing in other Southeast Asian countries.
