At least 72 people were injured in Bangladesh during a nationwide work stoppage called by opposition groups in an effort to topple the government of President Hussain Mohammed Ershad. Several homemade bombs filled with explosives and metal fragments went off in the capital, Dhaka, near a squad of paramilitary police, injuring 12 people. Another 30 people were wounded in a series of bombings in other cities, police said. And more than 30 people were reported injured in at least five train derailments blamed on sabotage by workers supporting the strike.
