Gasoline prices were increased by 6 cents to 81 cents per gallon in the Dominican Republic, and four transportation unions called a protest strike. President Joaquin Balaguer decreed the immediate increase, saying that more revenue is needed for public transportation. Union leaders, contending that public transport drivers cannot afford the increase, said a strike is the only alternative and scheduled one for Wednesday. Most of the residents of this Caribbean nation depend on public transportation.
