Israel said it will delay the expulsion of Mubarak Awad, a Palestinian-American activist whose campaign to end Israeli occupation by nonviolent means has been defended by the U.S. government. “There is no intention of issuing a deportation order for the moment,” an Interior Ministry spokeswoman said after Awad, 44, of East Jerusalem, ignored a ruling ordering him to leave when his visa expired Friday. The spokeswoman declined to comment on Israeli newspaper reports that Awad would ultimately be allowed to stay because he does not constitute a security threat. A naturalized U.S. citizen, Awad returned to Jerusalem three years ago. He believes Israel wants him out because he heads the Palestinian Center for the Study of Non-Violence.
