Wisconsin insurance regulators have confirmed they granted two insurance companies permission to market policies that limit or deny payments to in-state clients who suffer from AIDS or AIDS-related illnesses. But the action was a mistake, Deputy Insurance Commissioner Bob Elconin said. “We’ve been clearly assured by both companies that the exclusions will not be exercised.” The exclusions were granted to Rural Securities Inc. of Madison and Employers Health Insurance Co. of Green Bay, state records show. State insurance officials feared the exemptions could have been interpreted to allow the companies to seek reimbursement for benefits they paid on life or health insurance policies if a client later was found to have had AIDS, Elconin said.
