Thousands of Yugoslav Workers Strike
Thousands of workers in Yugoslavia, including about 3,500 coal miners, were on strike Sunday to press their demands for higher wages because of galloping inflation, newspapers reported.
Miners at the Mramor and Dobrnja coal mines in the Kreka basin near Tuzla in central Yugoslavia went on strike Friday evening.
Belgrade’s daily Vecernje Novosti said there were fears that the strikers might be joined by 10,000 other miners in the Kreka basin.
More than 11,000 workers put down their tools in Yugoslavia last week after adoption of the government’s anti-inflation program, which slapped huge price increases on foodstuffs and services.
The annual inflation rate in Yugoslavia--which left the Soviet Bloc in 1948--now is running at 170%. The country also has a foreign debt of $19 billion.
