West Europe’s Drop in Births Decried
The region’s falling birthrate will lead to “suicide” for Western Europe, French presidential hopeful Michel Rocard was quoted as saying on Sunday.
He said the decline poses the biggest security threat for Western Europe. “We’re committing suicide,” he said. “What’s the use of securing peace for our children if we don’t have any more children?” the Socialist former agriculture minister told the West German daily Die Welt.
“Defense only makes sense if it’s meant to defend someone,” he said. The interview was made available ahead of publication today.
