Geir Karlstad of Norway broke the world speed skating record for 5,000 meters with a time of 6:45.44 at the men’s World Cup at Heerenveen, the Netherlands. The old mark was 6:47.01, set by Dutch skater Leo Visser on the same track last Feb. 14.
At the women’s World Cup in East Berlin, East Germany’s Karin Kania, who won the 1,500-meter event on Saturday, scored victories Sunday in the 1,000- and 3,000-meter races.
