Government-authorized Polish unions demanded 100% pay increases to help workers deal with even larger impending increases in food, fuel and housing prices, the official news agency PAP reported. Union official Wojciech Wisniewski vowed after a meeting of labor leaders that they will oppose any government attempts to “shift the cost of economic inefficiency to the shoulders of the workers” through price manipulation. The government has scheduled a Nov. 29 referendum when Poles will be asked if they agree to radical economic reforms--including food price increases of 110%--aimed at rescuing the nation’s stagnant economy.
