The Kenyan government has withdrawn expulsion orders on a Canadian and eight U.S. missionaries and said they can continue their work, one of the group, Guilford Smith, said today.

The nine were ordered last Wednesday to leave the country within a week. No explanation was given for their expulsion or for the Kenyan government’s subsequent change of heart.

Newspapers had published a letter alleging a plot by the Ku Klux Klan to use missionaries to destabilize Kenya’s government because of its opposition to apartheid in South Africa. The letter was denounced as a forgery by the U.S. government.

Seven missionaries named in the letter have already been expelled and it was not immediately clear whether they would be allowed to return.
