Not Guilty, Lawyer Says in Beating Death of Girl

NEW YORK — Lawyer Joel Steinberg pleaded not guilty Monday to charges of beating to death the 6-year-old girl known as Lisa Steinberg, whom he claimed to have adopted.
His common-law wife, Hedda Nussbaum, also has been charged and awaits a hearing. Authorities believe she too was battered by Steinberg.
