The federal government has approved a $5-million grant to rehabilitate apartments and homes owned by the San Diego Housing Commission, the commission announced Tuesday.

The funds, approved by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, will be spent to replace water heaters, remodel bathrooms and kitchens, install new flooring and paint 161 of the commission’s oldest rental units.

Some of the money also will be used to expand tenant service programs--including alcohol- and drug-abuse prevention, job training and parent education--and to upgrade commission computers.
