Citing reports that a discarded cigarette sparked the Nov. 10 fire that killed 30 people at London’s King’s Cross subway station, the management of the city’s underground rail system banned smoking throughout the network. The new measure extends a January, 1985, ban on smoking in the trains or on subterranean platforms to ticket halls and above-ground platforms. At the same time, the state-funded agency in charge of the London subway said it will no longer accept advertisements on the underground network for any tobacco products. Published reports say a discarded cigarette falling through a gap in a wooden escalator probably ignited the fire.
