Panama’s National Assembly approved a resolution, 37-0, asking the government to suspend visas of U.S. military personnel and calling for the start of negotiations to remove the U.S. Southern Command from the country. The resolution also asks that all U.S. military personnel have certificates showing they have no contagious diseases. There are about 10,000 U.S. soldiers in Panama; the Southern Command is the headquarters for the U.S. military in Latin America. The resolution was prompted by a move in the U.S. Senate to halt all aid to Panama until there are significant reforms in the government.
