China announced a shake-up of its top military command today, replacing an aging veteran with a younger commander to continue a drive to make the 3-million-member armed forces more professional and less political.

New China News Agency said People’s Liberation Army Chief of Staff Yang Dezhi, 77, a hero of the 1930s Long March, was replaced by Chi Haotian, 62, formerly political commissar of the PLA’s Jinan Military Region, an important regional command.
