Social Security Income for the Elderly

Share

I am amazed and appalled at the insensitivity and callousness displayed by Glen E. Ansiel (Letters, Nov. 18) in which he condemns the Social Security system. As one who has lived through the horror of the 1929-1935 Depression and has witnessed actual starvation, I am eternally grateful for the basic security offered by this system which is not a dole, but a return on my investment.

Ansiel should be aware that there are many who are not as clever and as foresighted as he and that it is the responsibility of the community as a whole to provide the basic means of survival to those less fortunate and less well equipped.

We do as much for our cats and dogs, don’t we?
