Police in northern Jerusalem fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews protesting the showing of movies as a violation of the Sabbath. Authorities arrested 11 demonstrators in the Bar Ilan section of the city, Israel radio said, but no one was injured. The protesters shouted at police and passing motorists, and stones were thrown. Scattered clashes also were reported in central Jerusalem. Ultra-Orthodox groups have demonstrated almost every weekend since August, when some theaters began screening films on the Jewish Sabbath.
