A Belgian air force Hercules transport plane arrived Sunday in Ethiopia to airlift food to drought victims in the northern province of Tigre, where rebel ambushes are hindering transport by road.

Jean-Jacques Fresard, the delegate of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Ethiopia, said the plane will start work today, ferrying more than 70 tons of food a day from Asmara, the capital of Eritrea province, to Mekele, the capital of Tigre.

Separatist guerrillas in Eritrea and Tigre are fighting Ethiopia’s Marxist government.
