Haitians Take to Streets in Miami

Hundreds of angry Haitians shouted slogans on the streets of Miami’s Little Haiti section Sunday as news spread that national elections had been canceled in their homeland.

“They’re very mad. . . . They want to take a boat there to help out,” Farah Juste, a member of the board of the Haitian Refugee Center, shouted above the din of a crowded room where posters were hastily being made. “We didn’t think there would be the bloodshed there is.”

The impromptu demonstration forced police to close part of the main street running through the heart of the neighborhood, where 35,000 of the city’s estimated 50,000 Haitians have settled.

Police reported no arrests or violence among the crowd of between 300 and 500 people, and the street was reopened by evening after the crowd had dispersed.
