About 70 heavily armed Communist rebels raided a large logging camp in the Philippines, held workers hostage and burned equipment and a building, the army reported Sunday.

Col. Rogelio Villanueva, a brigade commmander, said the rebels destroyed heavy machinery worth about $342,000 during the raid Friday on the island of Mindanao.

It was the second attack in four months on the Agusan Woods Industries logging firm in Agusan del Sur province, more than 500 miles south of Manila, he told reporters.
