Pakistani Prime Minister Mohammed Khan Junejo, citing early returns, said that supporters of his Pakistan Muslim League “have won an overwhelming majority” in Monday’s violence-marred local elections. Junejo, speaking to reporters before leaving on a nine-day trip to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, said he also expects his party to do well when the newly elected councils meet to select their leaders. The country’s main opposition leader, Benazir Bhutto, whose Pakistan People’s Party posed the biggest challenge to the ruling party, charged that the government rigged the polls.
