Male sprinters will have to run 10.44 seconds or faster to make the 100-meter field, and female high jumpers will have to clear at least 6 feet 2 inches under qualifying standards announced for the 1988 Olympic Games.
For men, the standards also include 20.84 for the 200 meters, 3:38.5 for 1,500 meters, 7-4 1/2 for the high jump and 7,600 points for the decathlon. For women, they include 11.54 for the 100, 23.64 for the 200, 4:09 for the 1,500 and 5,700 points for the heptathlon.
