Liberia’s Chief Justice Chea Cheapoo was arrested and charged with criminal libel after having been impeached by the Senate for slandering President Samuel K. Doe. Family members said that Cheapoo, 47, appointed five months ago, was jailed in Monrovia. On Nov. 6, Cheapoo accused Doe and Justice Minister Scott Jenkins on television of accepting millions of dollars from foreign oil companies seeking to invest in the country. Doe quickly began impeachment proceedings against Cheapoo, who resigned, charging Doe with interfering with justice.
