Trojan Horse to Join Capital Protest
A 13-foot-high Trojan horse--a conservative group’s comment on Soviet intentions--headed out of New Hampshire on Saturday en route to Washington to help protest Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev’s summit with President Reagan.
Roped into a truck with its wooden head protruding from the open end, the horse is expected to arrive Tuesday in Washington, where it will be used in a planned Tuesday night demonstration across from the White House by Baltic ethnic groups.
Owned by the New Hampshire Conservative Union, the horse has been something of a landmark in the state for 10 years.
According to legend, the original Trojan horse was left at the gates of Troy by Greek soldiers who had besieged the city in vain. The Trojans took it inside the city walls, where Greek soldiers emerged at night and opened the city gates to waiting Greek soldiers, who destroyed the city.
George Allen, who offered to drive the horse to Washington, said the proposed U.S.-Soviet missile treaty is a similar ploy.
“The treaty and the whole Gorbachev visit is an attempt to have us let our guard down,” he said.
