Central bankers from the world’s leading Western industrial nations meet in the Swiss city of Basel today to discuss ways to cope with record lows of the dollar and a threat of world recession. The two days of confidential talks at the Bank for International Settlements, which is jointly owned by central banks, are part of a series of monthly meetings. Policy initiatives are rarely made public, but the talks will be watched because concern has mounted since the world stock market crash in October that the global economy could face a recession.
