The 87 city-owned supermarkets will freeze prices of basic foods and other essentials for the month of December as part of a program to hold down inflation, the government newspaper El Nacional said Sunday.

Privately owned supermarkets and department stores, meanwhile, announced December discounts of from 5% to 40% on 147 food, clothing and domestic articles.
