West Germany established a $1.8-million national foundation to support research on AIDS and help relieve suffering from the deadly disease. Health Minister Rita Suessmuth said in Bonn that the foundation, based in Koblenz, will be concerned mainly with improving patient care. In Osnabrueck, a conference of state health ministers was told that deaths in West Germany from acquired immune deficiency syndrome had more than doubled within a year--to 683 in October from 337 in October, 1986. The number of people known to have the disease nationwide rose to 1,486 from 715.
