Organizers abruptly canceled a funeral service today for victims of a terror campaign that left at least 34 people dead and thwarted national elections.

Survivors, family members, church leaders, civil rights activists and foreign diplomats had been invited to attend the memorial Mass at a downtown Roman Catholic cathedral.

But only minutes before it was to begin, Radio Metropole and Roman Catholic-operated Radio Soleil announced that it had been canceled. Organizers cited bad weather, but only a light drizzle was falling at the time.

Several people, including some politicians, already had shown up.

Dozens of people were killed Nov. 29, when violence forced the Electoral Council to cancel Haiti’s first free elections in 30 years to choose a president and National Assembly.
