U.S. Roman Catholic bishops, in a statement on AIDS issued today, acknowledged that some people do not adhere to the church’s teachings on human sexuality and recommended they be told how condoms may prevent the spread of the deadly disease.

“We are not promoting the use of prophylactics, but merely providing information that is part of the factual picture,” the church leaders stressed. Church teaching considers condoms unacceptable as a form of birth control.
