The Bangladesh government freed the country’s two main opposition leaders from house arrest to foster peace talks between President Hussain Mohammed Ershad and dissidents trying to topple him. But the two women, Sheik Hasina and Khaleda Zia, said they will not negotiate with the government and demanded that Ershad resign before any talks are held. Both said they will continue the campaigns they launched Nov. 10 to oust Ershad, who took power in a 1982 coup. The government also released 20 opposition members from detention.
