Indonesia’s Parliament has given final approval to changes in copyright laws that will protect intellectual property rights, including software, films and music.
Under criminal provisions of the new law, pirates would be subject to a maximum of seven years in jail and a $60,000 fine. Those who distribute or sell pirated works will be subject to maximum sentences of five years and fines of $30,000.
Books, dances, art works, songs and architectural designs are protected for the life of the creator and an additional 50 years after his or her death. Performances, speeches, lectures, maps, cinematographic works, musical recordings, translated materials and interpretive works are also protected for 50 years. Computer software, anthologies and adaptations receive 25 years of protection.
