Paced by a world best in the 400-meter relay, the Soviet Union won the men’s team title in the two-day European Cup swimming meet at Monte Carlo, Monaco.

The East German women, who won 12 of 14 events, won the women’s title.

The Soviet relay team swam the freestyle relay in 3:15.07 to better the previous best of 3:16.11, set by a U.S. team in April, 1978. However, the record cannot be considered a world record because it was done in a 25-meter pool. Only marks done in a 50-meter pool are considered official.

The Soviet men scored 249 points to beat the East German men, who were second with 200 points.
