Southeast : Job Funds Control Denied

Six cities--Bell, Cudahy, Maywood, Huntington Park, South Gate and Lynwood--have lost a bid to gain total control of federal Job Training Partnership Act funds slated for their areas.

City officials had sought state permission to control the training money, complaining that the county had inadequately served the area. Now officials say they plan to accept a county offer to join a more streamlined program that will enable them to control more--but not all--of the funding.

“It’s disappointing that we don’t get total control,” said Maynard Law, Cudahy assistant city manager, “but on the other hand there are a lot of advantages to the system that we’re going to be in.”
