A $13.7-million grant will allow the University of California, San Francisco, to create a new biological sciences program to concentrate efforts in genetics, molecular biology and immunology. The money comes from the Lucille P. Markey Charitable Trust and will be spread out over five years, officials said. The Markey donation will also allow the university to create “transgenic” mice, a laboratory species that have had genes of other organisms inserted into their genetic makeup in order to study how genes are controlled and how hereditary diseases may be eliminated.
