Leaders of the Florida Haitian community warned Thursday that thousands of Haitians could soon begin fleeing to American shores unless the United States drops its hands-off stance toward the military-dominated governing council in Haiti.

“We’ve been telling U.S. officials for years that every time there is political repression in Haiti, people flee,” said Roger Biamby, director of the Haitian American Community Assn. of Dade in Miami. Another leader, the Rev. Fritz Bazin, said: “I think we can expect boatloads.”
