General Telephone Co. of the Northwest is changing its name to GTE Northwest Inc. on Jan. 1. GTE Corp.’s six other domestic telephone companies will make similar name changes the same day to reflect the company’s growth beyond telephone service. General Telephone, which serves 800,000 access lines in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Northern California and western Montana, installs and maintains technical transmission facilities for businesses, government and defense facilities, college and universities.
