The World : Foes Unite in Zimbabwe

Share

Zimbabwean Prime Minister Robert Mugabe and chief opposition leader Joshua Nkomo signed an agreement to unite their political parties and establish a one-party socialist state. The new party will be called Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF), the current name of the ruling party. Mugabe will be leader of the party, and Nkomo is expected to be one of two vice presidents. The accord binds the two to try to end rebel violence in southwestern Matabeleland, home of the minority Ndebele people and Nkomo’s power base.
