An anti-government strike closed shops in the Bangladesh capital of Dhaka, but government offices and banks remained open. Seven people were hurt when a bomb exploded in central Dhaka, and 15 were hurt when police wielding batons charged a crowd that had set fire to a van filled with chickens. Four more opposition leaders were released from custody as President Hussain Mohammed Ershad tried to defuse protests against his government. Another 12-hour strike is scheduled for today.
