Calf Injury Forces Slaney to Skip Indoor Season

Mary Decker Slaney will sit out the 1988 indoor track season because of an injured right calf, her coach said Thursday.

Slaney, the country’s top female middle distance runner who has had an injury-filled career, hasn’t competed since last Feb. 28, when she won a 10K race in Phoenix.

Coach Luiz de Oliveira said Slaney’s injury didn’t appear to be serious but was not worth risking greater injury by running on the indoor circuit. Slaney plans to compete in the 1988 Olympics at Seoul, South Korea.
