Ending a two-day Christmas truce, leftist rebels in El Salvador destroyed a telephone company office with grenades and wounded two soldiers in a clash with army troops during separate attacks. Army officials said the telephone office in Tierra Blanca, 55 miles southeast of the capital, was destroyed in a pre-dawn raid. In Suchitoto, 40 miles to the northeast of San Salvador, rebels fought unsuccessfully for three hours in an apparent attempt to gain access to a hospital for medical supplies. Rebels were also reported to have destroyed 15 tons of coffee beans in the southeastern provinces of San Miguel and Usulutan.
