Conrad’s cartoon (Dec. 20) showing an Orthodox Jew on the back of a praying Palestinian, with the sign, “Free Soviet Jews” strikes me as moral simplicity at its near worst. Does Conrad actually feel that the West Bank Palestinians are as repressed as the Jews in the Soviet Union? Who was the last Palestinian denied the right to emigrate from Israel? Who was the last Palestinian sent to a labor camp or state-run mental hospital?
There are no answers to these questions. The West Bank Palestinians are the pawns of radical groups who use them as an example of Israeli evil. Without the West Bank refugees, what basis would the PLO and others have for their hatred of Israel?
Reality is that there is no Palestinian leader with the fraction of credibility that an Israeli Labor Party member has. The Arab states are using the refugees on the West Bank as ways of generating their own internal support.
