‘Nicaragua: New Challenges’
How ironic to find news of the planned massive buildup of Sandinista military forces on the front page of The Los Angeles Times (Part I, Dec. 13), that staunch defender of the Ortega regime. Only because of the defection of his chief of staff to the United States did Ortega admit to a secret 15-year arms pact with the Soviet Union designed to make Nicaragua the most massively armed nation in the hemisphere--indeed, the military equal of all the other Central American countries put together. Neither naivete nor outright stupidity excuses the liberals in the press or in Congress for their contribution to this dangerous situation.
