Philippine troops killed five Communist guerrillas in a battle in southern Luzon about 200 miles from Manila, military officials said. The fighting erupted shortly after a 48-hour Christmas cease-fire expired. Col. Oscar Florendo said an undetermined number of rebel troops were repelled in the brief battle and that assault rifles, grenades and other munitions were captured. In a radio message marking the 19th year of the insurgency, the outlawed Communist Party of the Philippines said the rebels are approaching a military stalemate with the government of President Corazon Aquino.
