French police arrested a man identified as the new military chief of the Basque separatist group in Spain. Interior Ministry sources in Madrid said that Ignacio Pujana Alberdi, 26, was detained in Angouleme in western France. Pujana Alberdi took over as chief of the ETA, or Basque Homeland and Freedom, after his predecessor, Santiago Arro1936746852October. Spanish sources said Pujana Alberdi ordered an attack earlier this month on the family quarters of a civil guard barracks in Saragossa. Eleven people died in that attack, raising to at least 50 the number killed by the ETA this year in its fight for a separate Basque state in northern Spain.
