Ill-Fated British Ferry Back in Tow
The Herald of Free Enterprise, a British ferry that capsized in March off a Netherlands port with the loss of nearly 200 lives, was taken in tow off South Africa on Thursday after having broken adrift while being towed to a Taiwan scrap yard.
Bad weather had damaged a West German tug, causing the ferry to break loose last Sunday, shipping quarters said. A South African vessel is now towing the Herald to South Africa’s Port Elizabeth, 180 nautical miles away, where it is due to arrive Saturday morning, the sources said.
